Playback compatibility guide
Choose your device for practical starting points. These are suggestions; app menus and supported formats vary by model and version.
Understand playback modes
Direct play sends the original file to a compatible device. Direct stream repackages compatible media and usually uses little processing. Transcoding converts video or audio to a format or bitrate your device can use.
An incompatible subtitle format can require the server to burn subtitles into the video. If playback stalls with subtitles, try another available track or briefly turn subtitles off as a diagnostic check.
Original quality can reduce unnecessary conversion when your connection and device support it. If it buffers, try a lower quality; maximum quality is not always the best choice for a limited connection. Don’t force playback formats your device cannot handle.
